Temporary visa concession extended until 31 December 2024

Due to the persistent backlogs in the processing of visa applications within South Africa (over 70 000 at this point), the (new) Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, has once more extended the exemption for persons awaiting outcomes of pending waiver or visa applications and temporary residence appeals.

Following the announcement on 4 July, this extension aims to protect applicants from adverse consequences while the Department of Home Affairs addresses processing backlogs. The Minister’s decision underscores a commitment to enhance South Africa’s visa system, supporting international investment, tourism, and job creation.

As per an initial assessment, those who (entered the country legally and) applied for waivers or temporary residence visas, or who have timeously appealed a negative decision, and who are still awaiting an outcome, may continue their activities as per their last visas, OR leave the country without being declared undesirable.
