No More SA Police Clearance - Directive 20 of 2016 ON HOLD

As of 1 October 2016, applications for visa or permanent residence made from within South Africa no longer need to be accompanied by South African police clearance certificates. These will be replaced by an internal and inter-departmental security check based on the applicant’s fingerprints which are taken during the application process. The Home Affairs-appointed VFS charges an additional R 175 for this process. Relevant police clearance certificates from all other countries still need to be produced as before.

Notice from VFS: "Please note that the replacement of the South African police requirement has been temporarily postponed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
