Team SA finish top in Africa

Cape Town - Team South Africa capped a memorable all-round performance at the 2012 London Olympics with top spot in Africa in the final medal standings.

SA's return of 3 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze medal were good enough for 24th position in the overall standings. The USA led the way with 46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals.

Ethiopia finished second in Africa in 25th spot, with Kenya third in a disappointing 28th position for the proud east-Africa nation.

In terms of total medals won, SA's six - which equalled their best return (Athens 2004) since readmission to the Olympics in 1992 - was good enough for a tie for 34th alongside North Korea, Croatia and India.
